Check Signing 101 - Dot Matrix PrintersScenario – Your checks are computer generated using pre-printed continuous form check stock and a dot matrix printer. In this scenario you have four basic options to automate the check signing process: |
Option #1 Computer Interface Check Signers
Computer Interface Check Signers such as the will interface with your dot matrix printer to automate the check signing process. The Wycom Check Signer is physically connected between your computer and dot-matrix printer. Prior to printing checks you would activate the Wycom Elite Check Signer or Wycom Classic Check Signer using our dual key security system. Your checks would then be printed in the same manner that they are currently printed. Each check would then be printed, signed and our optional graphic protected amount can be added as well. In addition, your signature can be suppressed at a pre-determined dollar amount. This feature ensures that no check is automatically signed over a set dollar amount. Also, with a Wycom Elite or Wycom Classic computer interface check signer a valid check can only be printed and signed when a check is requested from your accounting software and the check signer activated. This provides a level of security that cannot be found with stand alone mechanical check signers. In addition, should you ever change accounting software or check forms, our Wycom Check Signers can simply be re-programmed for these changes. Should you migrate to cut sheet laser checks in the future any continuous form mechanical check signer would become obsolete and not have the ability sign cut sheet laser checks! The Wycom Classic Check Signer is tailor made for dot matrix applications only and cannot be upgraded to address laser check signing or laser check printing applications. However, our Wycom Elite Check Signer will allow you to address your current dot matrix applications as well as upgrade in the future for your laser check printing and signing applications.
Option #2 Mechanical Check Signers
Continuous Form Check Signers such as the Hedman EDP 2000 can be used to sign continuous form tractor-fed checks once they have been printed. Most continuous form check signers use an engraved signature plate to imprint the signature on each check as it feeds through the check signer. Mechanical check signers are less secure that the Wycom Elite or Classic Check Signers, however there are applications where they are well suited. For instance, checks that are printed in an IT department and sent to accounting for signing by other personnel. Another instance would be for the few applications that use printers that do not have the graphic capabilities that are required to use the Wycom Elite or Classic Check Signers.
Another variation of mechanical check signers is the fact the a check signing head can be fitted to a forms burster to sign and burst checks in one operation. These type of burster\check signers are usually only used in large check volume operations that are willing to sacrifice security for speed. In conclusion, you should consider the lack of security and the inability to adapt to future changes in your check printing process before purchasing a mechanical check signer.
Option #3 Single Feed Mechanical Check Signers
For small volume check signing operations our Paymaster 8025 Check Signer and Widmer S-3 Check Signer offer a simple way to sign checks one at a time. The Paymaster 8025 Check Signer allows you to sign your checks with a simple pull of a handle. The Paymaster 8025 Check Signer offers key locks to control check signer use and signature plate access. The Widmer S-3 Check Signer is a very simple check signer to use. Simply insert your check into the Widmer S-3 Check Signer and the check will trigger the S-3 to sign your check. Both the Paymaster 8025 Check Signer and the Widmer S-3 Check Signer offer multicolor ribbons for added signature protection.
Option #4 Dot matrix to laser conversions using the Wycom Elite Laser Check Printing System
Eliminate pre-printed check stock forever!!!
In most instances our Wycom Elite Laser Check Printing System can convert your existing dot-matrix data into a laser printable format. This feature gives you the ability to laser print your checks using blank cut-sheet laser security check stock. The dot-matrix to laser conversion process works independently of your accounting software. This is a great solution for accounting applications that do not have the ability to laser print your checks! You also have the ability to use pre-printed or blank cut sheet laser check stock.
